The Philippines, as one of the megadiverse countries in the world, is home for almost 100 species of sea cucumbers. 50 of these species are edible and are considered marketable. Some are considered high value items, and is being harnest by local communities as source of livelihood and food. With the challenges brought by overfishing, pollution, and climate change, the supply of local sea cucumbers particularly the “sand fish”, a group of expert lead by a women marine scientist, with the assistance from international and local organizations and academic institutions, led the study, development, creation, and maintenance of sea ranches for these valuable invertebrates. Dr. Anette Juinio-Nuñez discussed on this episode their initiatives and its success through the active participation of the communities, particularly rural women and fisherfolk.
