Childcare and geographical mobility in southern Europe

This paper analyzes whether the organization of child care services accounts for the low geographical mobility of Southern European countries. The Southern emancipated children live close to their family to take advantage of the low labor force participation rate of their mothers in order to reconcile work and family life once they have children. It present a model in which couples make fertility, female employment and mobility choices and test its predictions using ECHP data. The deterring effect of the wife working is only significant if they have children and live in Southern Europe.
