Why do women outlive men? Science zeroes in on answer

Women tend to live longer than men. But it wasn’t always that way, a new study says. Adults born in the late 19th century were the first to see men dying at much higher rates than women. So the gender difference in life expectancy is fairly recent, and probably isn’t based on anatomy alone, researchers say.

CAAP to put up ‘all gender’ restrooms

“All gender” restrooms will be put up in 41 airports run by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). Construction of the project is set to start this month, CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio said in a text message yesterday. “Communal toilets or all-gender restroom means that anyone can use this restroom regardless of gender identity or expression,” he said. Gender-neutral restrooms will be put up along with those for males, females and persons with disability. The project is part of CAAP’s Gender Awareness Development (GAD) program.

Millennium Dev’t Goals hailed for success in curbing poverty

THE Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) program has become the “most successful” initiative to combat poverty, after it achieved its target of halving the number of poor worldwide, the United Nations (UN) said in a report … Gender equality in terms of school and work also improved, the UN said, with narrowing gaps in access to education and employment … NEDA Secretary-General Arsenio M. Balisacan said in the government’s penultimate report that the country is on track to attain the MDG targets on universal access to primary education, providing schooling for girls, trimming infant and under-five deaths, reducing malaria cases, boosting TB detection and cure rates, and increasing the number of homes with access to safe water … However, Mr. Balisacan noted that “greater effort” is needed in the areas of improving the completion rate for the elementary school level, maternal deaths, access to reproductive health, and reducing HIV cases.

Are single women entitled to maternity benefits?

THIS is a question often asked by female members of the Social Security System (SSS) who had become pregnant outside of marriage … The law is silent on the civil status of the female member. Instead, it requires that the member must have paid at least three monthly contributions within the 12-month period before the semester of childbirth. Thus, a member’s right to the benefit is assured by her contributions, regardless of her civil status. Single women, therefore, are entitled to maternity benefits for as long as they meet the qualification requirements under the law.

Gender equality and human rights

The achievement of substantive equality is understood as having four dimensions: redressing disadvantage; countering stigma, prejudice, humiliation and violence; transforming social and institutional structures; and facilitating political participation and social inclusion. The paper shows that, although not articulated in this way, these dimensions are clearly visible in the application by the various interpretive bodies of the principles of equality to the enjoyment of treaty rights. –
