Powerless women in power?

NEW YORK—Are women political leaders finally coming into their own? Are they not only winning more elections, but also finally able to campaign and govern with no more—or less—scrutiny, scandal, and mockery than their male peers? …  So are today’s women leaders the real deal or just figureheads? The answer is likely to be the same for men and women. Leaders either lead, or they don’t.

Analysis: 5 things to know about the Vatican’s family synod

Vatican City — Pope Francis on Sunday opens a two-week meeting of bishops and cardinals from around the world aimed at making the church’s teaching on family life — marriage, sex, contraception, divorce, and homosexuality — relevant to today’s Catholic families and more readily understood and appreciated. The pre-synod debate has been dominated by mudslinging between liberals and conservatives over divorce and remarriage, but there are many more issues up for discussion.

Bangsamoro commission starts building ‘Filipino model’ of reconciliation

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Swiss-led Transitional Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) for the proposed Bangsamoro territory has started drafting what it calls a “localized formula” for the reconciliation process in the Mindanao area that has been torn by decades of armed struggle. “This is going to be a Filipino model, a Filipino narrative, a Filipino process, with Filipino ownership,” said TJRC chairperson Mo Bleeker during the commission’s launching in Cotabato City on Saturday … Ms. Bleeker said their aim is to produce custom-fit healing processes that are “gender- and culture-sensitive, meaningful, realistic and feasible, and will contribute to the deepest sense of conflict transformation and promotion of trust among stakeholders.”

#NoShame: A campaign in black and white

Countless jokes have been made about the uncle who likes to grope his underage nieces or the colleague who makes risqué comments. Then there’s the “manyakis” guy in the jeepney who copped a feel. How about the old man in the LRT who pressed himself against your behind? We’ve all laughed but is it really funny?
